Morning Market Report, September 16, 2026

The crypto market is starting the day under broad selling pressure, with the total market cap dropping 5.4% in the past 24 hours to $2.598 trillion.

BTC trades at $75,925, down 2.48% on the day. Despite the decline, 64.5% of leveraged traders are positioned for a price rise, and new bullish leveraged bets are actively being added. The fee that those betting on a rise pay to the other side currently sits at an annualized 6.7%, which means the market is still leaning long despite falling prices. In the past hour alone, bullish positions worth roughly $170K were forced closed, compared to $789K on the short side, suggesting a short squeeze hit alongside the broader drop. Bitcoin ETFs recorded a single-day outflow of $288.7 million yesterday, and the 7-day cumulative outflow now stands at $416.9 million, reflecting institutional money stepping back.

ETH is at $2,403, down 4.24%, with 76.6% of leveraged traders positioned long. Leveraged activity is relatively calm here, with no significant new pile-up of bets in either direction. Over $194K in bullish ETH positions were liquidated in the past 24 hours, the largest single-coin long liquidation in today's data.

XRP is the hardest-hit major today, falling 9.23% to $1.2907. Over 71% of leveraged traders are still positioned for a rise, yet the fee that those betting on a rise pay is actually negative at an annualized -12.1%, meaning the market is simultaneously paying people to hold bullish positions. That combination, crowd leaning long but price sliding hard, is worth watching closely. New bullish leveraged bets are still being added into the drop.

SOL trades at $97.21, down 4.61%. Seven in ten leveraged traders are long, though no meaningful new leverage is accumulating on either side, and liquidation volumes remain relatively modest.

Across the market, over $565 million in bullish leveraged positions were wiped out in the last 24 hours, against just $98 million on the bearish side. That heavy imbalance confirms the selling pressure has been falling disproportionately on traders who were betting on a rise. The overall market regime is signaling a strong downward trend with very limited participation from altcoins, and volatility is rated high. The Fear and Greed index sits at 51, technically neutral, which is somewhat at odds with the scale of the moves, and suggests many retail participants have not yet shifted to fear mode. VIX, a measure of expected volatility in traditional equity markets, is at 17.2, moderate but elevated enough to indicate broader financial market unease.

We are also running an experimental measurement of how overheated BTC and ETH might be, with scores of 0.33 and 0.26 out of 1.0 respectively. These are measurements we are tracking, not signals, and a more complete reading is scheduled for September 22.

Today the key things to watch are whether ETF outflows extend into a second day, whether XRP's unusual combination of crowd optimism and negative fee resolves through a sharper price move, and whether the Fear and Greed index begins to reflect the scale of liquidations seen over the past 24 hours.
