Morning Market Report. September 4, 2026.

The crypto market opened Thursday with broad-based gains, led by XRP, as leveraged short positions across major coins were forcibly closed overnight, adding fuel to the upside move.

BTC is trading at $80,860, up 4.0% in the last 24 hours. Only 43.7% of the crowd is positioned long, meaning the majority is still leaning bearish or sitting out. That is notable because the price is rising largely on the back of bearish bets being squeezed out, not from fresh conviction buying. In the past hour alone, over $629,000 worth of short positions were force-liquidated on BTC, compared to just $40,000 on the long side. The fee that traders pay to maintain bets on rising prices currently sits at an annualised 9.5%, which is elevated but not yet extreme.

ETH trades at $2,510, up 4.4%. Here the picture is different: 68.4% of the crowd is long, and new leveraged bets on further gains are actively being added. The fee for holding those bets runs at 11.0% annualised. In the last hour, $120,000 in bullish positions were liquidated versus $51,000 on the short side, a reminder that crowded upside bets carry their own flush-out risk.

XRP is the session's strongest performer at $1.4483, up 5.8%, with a similarly crowded long setup at 68.2% and the same 11.0% annualised fee. SOL lags slightly at $103.89, up 2.8%, but its fee for holding bullish bets is a much calmer 3.9%, suggesting less froth in that corner of the market.

Flows and sentiment are broadly supportive. Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded $276.8 million in net inflows yesterday, their second consecutive day of positive flows, bringing the seven-day running total to $630.7 million. The total crypto market cap stands at $2.73 trillion, with Bitcoin accounting for 59.3% of that, a high dominance reading that typically reflects capital concentrating in the largest asset. The Fear and Greed index reads 74, firmly in Greed territory.

Across the full market over 24 hours, $444 million worth of short positions were force-closed, against $87 million on the long side. That asymmetry explains much of today's price action: shorts were the fuel.

Our internal overheat measurement for BTC and ETH currently scores 0.46 and 0.47 respectively on a scale where 1.0 would be maximum heat. We track this as a calibration exercise only, with a review date of September 22; it is a measurement, not a directional signal, and should not be read as one.

What to watch today: The regime data flags extreme volatility alongside a strong uptrend, which historically means moves in both directions can be sharp and fast. Given the heavy concentration of new leveraged long bets on ETH and XRP, any sudden reversal in price could trigger a cascade of forced closures on the long side, just as shorts were flushed today. Keep an eye on whether ETF inflows continue for a third consecutive day, and watch whether BTC's crowd positioning starts shifting from its current minority-long stance, as a swing there would change the character of the move significantly.
