Morning Market Report. September 24, 2026.

The broader crypto market opened Wednesday under visible selling pressure, with total market capitalization dropping nearly 5% in the past 24 hours to $2.88 trillion, while most major coins posted meaningful losses across the board.

Bitcoin is trading at $84,400, down 2.4% on the day. A slight majority of leveraged traders, around 54%, are positioned for a rise, and the fee paid by those betting on higher prices sits at a moderate annualized 5.6%, suggesting no extreme crowding yet. However, over the past hour roughly $1.34 million worth of long positions were forcibly closed by the market, compared to only $208k on the short side, meaning bulls absorbed the heavier hit.

Ethereum at $2,687 fell 2.7%, but the picture here is notably more stretched. Nearly 73% of leveraged ETH traders are positioned long, and the fee those longs pay runs at 11% annualized, one of the higher readings among major coins today. In the past hour, liquidations were roughly even between longs and shorts, around $860k versus $933k, so neither side is being cleanly washed out yet.

XRP is the session's clearest underperformer, dropping 5.7% to $1.51. About 70% of leveraged traders are on the long side, new leveraged long positions are actively being added, yet the fee structure has flipped negative at -3.9% annualized, meaning it is currently the shorts, not the longs, who are paying to hold their positions. That combination of heavy long positioning and negative funding is worth watching closely, as it creates an unusual tug of war between sentiment and mechanics.

Solana trades at $115.56, off 2.4%, with 65% of leveraged traders leaning long and new leveraged long bets continuing to accumulate. Nearly $210k in long positions were liquidated in the past hour versus only $11k short, a lopsided flush that reflects the directional pressure.

On the flow side, Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded a fifth consecutive day of net inflows, pulling in approximately $181 million today and $1.74 billion over the past seven days. That sustained institutional buying is one of the few constructive data points in an otherwise cautious session. The Fear and Greed index reads 71, labeled Greed, which sits in an interesting tension with the market's actual downward price action today.

Across the full market, over $447 million in leveraged long positions were forcibly closed in the past 24 hours versus roughly $94 million on the short side. BTC longs accounted for $134 million of that and ETH longs for $97 million. The ratio of long liquidations to short liquidations remains heavily skewed, reflecting that the majority of leveraged risk was positioned upward heading into this decline.

As a measurement we track but do not treat as a directional signal, our internal heat scores for BTC and ETH both registered above 0.79 and 0.84 respectively as of our last reading on September 22. We note this for awareness only.

Today, keep an eye on whether ETH's crowded long positioning and elevated funding fee begin to unwind, whether XRP stabilizes or the negative funding environment attracts more short-side pressure, and whether the streak of ETF inflows holds into the close, since that has been one of the more consistent bullish structural signals in recent sessions.
