Morning Market Report. October 2, 2026.
The broader crypto market is pushing higher in price terms, but the total market capitalization is actually down 1.5% over 24 hours, a split that signals large-cap gains are masking weakness in smaller coins.
Bitcoin sits at $85,350, up 2.3% on the day. The crowd is almost perfectly split, with 50.4% positioned for further gains, which means there is no strong lean in either direction. New leveraged bets on upward movement are being added, and over the past hour short-side positions worth roughly $1 million were wiped out compared to only $134k on the long side, meaning sellers got hurt more recently. The fee paid annually by traders betting on price rises stands at 3.8%, which is moderate and does not yet signal an overheated crowd.
Ethereum trades at $2,722, up 1.4%. Here the crowd is more one-sided, with 70.7% leaning bullish, and the annual fee for holding leveraged long bets has climbed to 7.8%. New bullish leverage is still being added, so a large chunk of the market is betting on ETH rising while paying a noticeable ongoing cost to do so.
XRP at $1.51 and SOL at $120.19 show a similar picture on the crowd side, with 71% and 64% of traders positioned long respectively. XRP carries the highest cost for holding bullish leveraged positions at 11% annualized, as does SOL. The difference is that SOL's leveraged positioning is relatively calm and not building aggressively, while XRP is still seeing new bullish bets added.
On flows, Bitcoin ETFs recorded an outflow of roughly $93 million yesterday, the second consecutive day of net withdrawals from these funds, even though the seven-day total remains positive at around $528 million. Large wallets and institutional vehicles have been pulling cash out short-term while the price still rises, a divergence worth watching.
Sentiment reads 72 out of 100, firmly in the "Greed" zone. The overall market structure is flagging a strong uptrend with broad participation across coins, normal volatility levels, and the system alarm is quiet. As a separate measurement with no confirmed predictive edge, internal heat scores for BTC (0.36) and ETH (0.45) on a scale to 1 are something we are tracking; they do not read as extreme at this point.
Today, watch whether ETF outflows continue for a third day while price holds its gains, and whether the fee cost for holding bullish ETH and XRP leveraged positions keeps rising, as a sustained climb there would mean the market is increasingly expensive to stay bullish in. The gap between rising individual coin prices and a falling total market cap is also worth monitoring as the day develops.
