Morning Market Report. October 8, 2026.

The broader crypto market opened Thursday under modest but consistent selling pressure, with total market capitalization down 4.4% over the past 24 hours to roughly $2.84 trillion.

Bitcoin is trading at $83,001, down about 1% on the day. Nearly 64% of leveraged traders are positioned for a price rise, yet the market is not showing any unusual buildup of new leveraged bets, which suggests the existing positioning is relatively stable for now. In the past hour, just over $1.15 million worth of long bets were forcibly closed by exchanges after prices moved against them, compared to only $208k on the short side, meaning buyers using leverage absorbed more pain than sellers.

Ethereum sits at $2,573, off 1.5%. A notable 77% of leveraged traders are betting on a rise, which is a heavily skewed crowd. Interestingly, those traders are currently paying a small fee to hold their long positions rather than receiving one, which reflects some softness in actual demand for upside exposure despite the bullish crowd count. Forced closures of long positions were modest at around $35k in the last hour.

XRP dropped 2.5% to $1.4244 and shows the most extreme crowd tilt at nearly 74% long. Similar to ETH, long-side traders are paying a noticeable fee to stay in their positions, a detail worth watching when the crowd leans this heavily one way.

Solana fell 1.7% to $116.23. Unlike the other three, the recent forced closures here hit short bets rather than longs, with just under $5k of short positions unwound in the past hour. Still, the broader picture across all four coins is that over the full 24-hour window, forced long closures vastly outpaced short closures, totaling roughly $235 million in longs versus $51 million in shorts across the market.

On flows and sentiment, Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded a single-day outflow of approximately $277 million, and over the past seven days the net picture is still slightly negative at minus $38 million. This means institutional money flowing through ETF products has been net leaving, not entering, over the short-term window. The Fear and Greed index reads 64, labeled Greed, a moderate reading that sits in some tension with the broader market direction currently pointing down. VIX, a measure of expected volatility in traditional stock markets, sits at a calm 15, suggesting no particular stress signal is arriving from outside crypto at this moment.

The overall market regime at this time of writing is risk-off with a strong downward trend, but that trend is narrow rather than broad. Bitcoin dominance has climbed to 58.7%, meaning BTC is holding its relative value better than smaller coins in this dip. We also measure an internal heat score for BTC at 0.57 and ETH at 0.48 out of a possible 1, but these are figures we track for observation purposes only and carry no confirmed predictive value on their own.

Things to watch today: whether ETF outflows continue or reverse, how leveraged long positions behave if prices dip further given the heavy long-side crowd in ETH and XRP, and whether Bitcoin dominance continues to climb as a sign that capital is consolidating into the larger asset rather than spreading out.
