Morning Market Report. Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The crypto market is broadly higher this morning, with all major coins posting modest gains and overall conditions remaining calm.
BTC trades at $81,069, up 1.6% in the last 24 hours. About two-thirds of leveraged traders are positioned for further upside, and the fee that bullish leveraged traders pay to maintain their positions sits at a moderate 5.8% annualized, suggesting no extreme crowding on the long side. In the past hour, short-side leveraged positions worth roughly $406k were forcibly closed, while longs were barely touched, which is consistent with the gentle grind higher we are seeing.
ETH is at $2,358, up 1.9%. Here the picture is more stretched: nearly 75% of leveraged traders are positioned long, and the equivalent fee for holding those bullish bets has reached 11% annualized. Notably, leveraged long positions on ETH have been getting forcibly closed over the past hour, around $419k worth, meaning some overstretched bulls are being washed out even as the price holds up.
XRP gained the most of the four, rising 2.8% to $1.336. Crowd sentiment is similarly tilted long at 74%, with the same 11% annualized fee on bullish bets, though the leverage environment is relatively quiet with no unusual forced closures. SOL trades at $101.97, up 1.8%, with crowd positioning and funding conditions nearly identical to XRP, and again no notable leverage stress.
Across the broader market, total crypto market cap stands at $2.73 trillion, up 1.7% on the day. Bitcoin's share of that total is 59.4%, which is relatively high and reflects that capital is still anchored in the largest asset rather than rotating freely into smaller coins. The Fear and Greed index reads 51 out of 100, sitting squarely in neutral territory, so the market is neither panicking nor euphoric right now. Traditional market volatility as measured by the VIX is at 17.5, which is relaxed by recent standards and not flashing any external stress signal. Over the past 24 hours, traders betting on price drops got hit considerably harder than bulls, with forced closures of short positions totalling around $103 million versus $41 million on the long side.
ETF flows into Bitcoin spot products remain positive: yesterday saw roughly $24.5 million in net new money, and over the past seven days the cumulative inflow stands at $436 million, now two consecutive days of positive flow. These are real-money institutional purchases, not leveraged bets, and the seven-day total provides a modest tailwind to spot demand.
What to watch today: ETH stands out as the coin where positioning is most stretched relative to its move, so it is worth watching whether those forced long closures accelerate or stabilize as the European and US sessions open. On BTC, the ETF flow trend is the cleaner data point to follow, as a reversal to outflows would shift the demand picture noticeably. We also measure an internal heat score for BTC at 0.51 and ETH at 0.41 on a scale where higher means more stretched, but these are instruments we use to track conditions over time rather than signals with a proven predictive edge, so treat them as background context only.
