What happened?
An experimental Bitcoin chain that enforces a rule known as BIP-110 has ground to a halt. According to The Defiant, the chain has not mined a single new block since Saturday evening and is stuck at a height of two blocks.
A quick clarification to avoid confusion: those two blocks refer to the height of the alternative chain itself, not the main Bitcoin chain. Bitcoin's main network keeps running without interruption. Only this separate experiment has stalled.
The reason, according to The Defiant, is simple: the chain lost its only miner. Without the computing power (hashrate) needed to process transactions and add new blocks, the chain effectively came to a stop.
A BIP (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) is a formalized proposal to change the rules of the Bitcoin network. Whether it gets adopted, however, depends on whether miners and node operators actually start using it. Without support, it remains only a proposal on paper, or a chain that nobody maintains.
Who is behind BIP-110?
According to The Defiant, the supporters of the proposal include Luke Dashjr, who maintains the Bitcoin Knots client and is the chief technology officer of the mining pool Ocean.
According to CoinDesk, the Ocean pool supported BIP-110 by default. That means miners connected to Ocean would contribute to it automatically unless they chose otherwise.
Why did the chain stop if the pool supported it?
This is the heart of the story, but it is important to be precise about what each source actually claims.
The Defiant states that the chain stopped because its only miner abandoned it. CoinDesk separately reports that Simple Mining, a company that runs mining machines through Ocean, used a feature in the pool's software and chose to deviate from the default: it rejected BIP-110. Ocean did support BIP-110 by default, but its software lets individual miners decide for themselves.
So both sources describe two pieces of the same picture that fit together. However, neither of the cited sources explicitly claims that Simple Mining's decision was the direct and sole cause of the entire chain stopping. The connection is probable, not literally confirmed.
Whatever the exact causality, the episode is a concrete illustration of how power is distributed in Bitcoin. A pool can set a default policy, but the final say on what actually gets mined can rest with the individual hardware operator.
What do the supporters plan next?
According to The Defiant, BIP-110's supporters are now discussing a change to the proof-of-work algorithm (the mechanism by which miners compete for the right to add a block).
Changing the proof-of-work would in theory allow the alternative chain to be mined with a different type of hardware, one not tied to the dominant ASIC machines of the main Bitcoin chain. What exactly such a change would look like, and whether it will happen at all, is not yet clear from the sources. This is an open discussion, not a finished decision.
How does a miner's size relate to control over the network?
The episode nicely illustrates a property that Kryptomagazín also points out: in the Bitcoin network, even a very small miner can matter. Kryptomagazín describes the case of a Bitaxe device, a small home miner that has already mined an entire Bitcoin block several times, despite the fact that mining today is dominated by giant data centers.
In the case of BIP-110 this was not a small miner's win, but the opposite side of the same coin: a single participant who decides to leave can halt an entire alternative chain if nobody else is mining on it.

When reading news about "forks" and new BIPs, it is useful to distinguish a few things:
