What just happened?
According to CoinDesk, Bitcoin (BTC) is holding near the $77,000 mark after gaining roughly 22% over the past week. At the same time, the two biggest altcoin winners of recent days, XRP and Zcash (ZEC), pulled back after their sharp rallies. Market attention is shifting to the debut of new Fed chief Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. [1]
This is a report on what happened, not a recommendation to buy or sell. Below we separate the facts from the speculation.
Why did Zcash surge to an eight-year high?
Zcash, the privacy-focused cryptocurrency, jumped more than 50% in 24 hours on Saturday according to the Polish outlet CrypS.pl, reaching roughly $855. That is its highest level since 2018. [2]
The main cited catalyst was Grayscale's filing to launch the first U.S. spot Zcash ETF. [2][3]
What does Grayscale's ETF filing contain?
According to CryptoSlate, the proposed Zcash ETF has the following parameters:
| Parameter | Detail |
|---|---|
| Annual fee | 2.5% |
| Ticker / exchange | ZCSH on NYSE Arca |
| Change | renaming the existing trust to "The Zcash ETF" |
| SEC amendment date | August 21 |
| DCG affiliate stake | according to one dated calculation, ownership of up to roughly 34% of the fund |
The registration is still preliminary. Per the filing, the securities cannot yet be sold, and the SEC has neither approved nor rejected them. The goal of the ETF structure is to solve the trust's long-standing problem of tracking the price of the underlying asset. To do that, large intermediaries, so-called authorized participants, would create or redeem shares in blocks of 10,000 units. [3]
Was this real demand, or speculation?
The data suggests that a large part of the move was driven by derivatives, not the spot market. According to The Block and CoinGlass data, 24-hour futures volume was nearly $10 billion and open interest was roughly $1.76 billion. [4]
In other words: the rally was largely fueled by leveraged speculation on the future price, not solely by buying the token itself. That is also consistent with the fact that both Zcash and XRP subsequently retreated. [1][4]
What to watch with this type of event?
- Whether the SEC takes a position on Grayscale's filing. For now, it has neither approved nor rejected anything. [3]
- The ratio of futures volume to spot. When a move is driven mainly by derivatives, volatility tends to be higher in both directions. [4]
- The rhetoric out of Jackson Hole and Kevin Warsh's first public appearance in the role of Fed chief, where the broader market's attention is shifting. [1]
What we don't know yet
It is not confirmed that the ETF filing was the sole reason for Zcash's rise; sources cite it as one of the main catalysts alongside speculation. [2][4] We do not know the final form or the fate of the filing at the SEC. [3] We also do not know how the prices of Bitcoin, XRP, or Zcash will develop after the date of this report.
