What happened?
According to CoinDesk, support for Cardano has been added to the official x402 toolkit. This allows apps and so-called AI agents (autonomous programs powered by artificial intelligence that can independently carry out actions, including payments) to pay in the ADA token and other tokens on the Cardano network.
x402 is a payment standard built on the HTTP status code 402 ("Payment Required"), designed to enable machine payments directly at the level of web requests. Adding Cardano means the network now sits alongside Solana and XRP Ledger among the chains vying for the role of payment layer for AI agents.
What is still only in the testing phase?
One important detail: according to CoinDesk, the facilitator (the component that verifies and settles payments between parties) for Cardano has so far only been tested in a pre-production environment. In other words, this is a step toward production deployment, not a finished solution running live. When or whether it will move into full operation does not follow from the source.
How does ZetaChain fit into this?
The same week brought another signal that chains are realigning around AI. According to The Defiant and CryptoSlate, an on-chain vote for ZetaChain approved Proposal 68, which shuts down the network's standalone Layer 1 and moves the ZETA token to Solana as an SPL token at a 1:1 ratio.
The figures from the vote (per CryptoSlate and The Defiant):
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Support for the proposal | approx. 99.44% |
| Votes in favor | 263.65 million ZETA |
| Votes against | 744,658 ZETA |
| Abstained | 752,300 ZETA |
| Turnout | 58% (quorum was 40%) |
| End of voting | September 20 |
According to CryptoSlate, ZetaChain states that its own L1 no longer matches the direction of the project, which is pivoting toward private AI. CryptoSlate also emphasizes that the vote itself does not immediately move tokens or shut down the network, it only gives the core contributors a mandate to prepare the migration.
And what about that outage on Solana?
A reminder of operational reality belongs in the picture too. According to the Coinbase status page, on September 21 there were delayed sends and receives on the Solana network. Coinbase marked the incident as resolved the same day and stated that buys, sells, and fiat transfers were not affected and user funds were safe.
This is a separate incident at a specific exchange, not a direct part of the AI payments story. We include it as context: the infrastructure that AI agent payments are meant to rely on also has ordinary operational outages.
What does this mean and what we don't know yet
The throughline is clear: several networks are simultaneously positioning themselves as the payment layer for AI agents. Cardano is doing so by connecting to x402, ZetaChain by betting on Solana.
But what the sources do not document:
- Whether and when the Cardano facilitator will be deployed in production.
- What real volume of payments is currently going through x402 (on any network).
- Whether ZetaChain's move to Solana will actually happen and on what timeline.
- Any causal connection between these events. Timing overlap does not mean they are directly related.
What to watch out for with this type of news
With announcements like "network X supports payments for AI agents," it is useful to distinguish three things: (1) a standard or tool exists, (2) it is deployed in production, and (3) money actually flows through it. The Cardano news is so far mostly at points (1) to (2). We will verify the score on this topic based on whether the facilitator moves into production and whether a measurable transaction volume appears.
