What exactly did Kraken launch?
Crypto exchange Kraken has held a standalone trading tournament aimed at Ukrainian users, timed to Ukraine's Independence Day. According to Incrypted, the event is called the "Independence Tournament" and runs from August 13 to September 13, 2026.
Participants compete against each other based on absolute profit and loss (P/L), meaning how much they earn or lose on futures trades over the given period. A future is a derivative contract in which a trader speculates on the future price of an asset, often with leverage, which magnifies both the potential gain and the potential loss.
How are the rewards divided?
The total reward pool is $11,200, paid out in the USDG stablecoin (a stablecoin is a cryptocurrency pegged to the value of another asset, in this case the US dollar). According to Incrypted, the breakdown is as follows:
| Group | Reward |
|---|---|
| Top 43 traders by P/L | $10,000 |
| Other participants who meet the conditions | $1,200 |
| Total | $11,200 |
The exchange presents the event with a pool of 500,000 hryvnias. Converting $11,200 into that figure is approximate and depends on the current exchange rate, which is why we label it as probable rather than confirmed.
What financial shape is Kraken in?
The tournament comes at a time when Kraken's parent company, Payward, has posted a solid quarter. According to The Block, adjusted revenue in Q2 reached $508 million, a 17 percent year-over-year increase. According to Cointelegraph, revenue grew despite weaker spot activity, with a rising share of revenue coming from activities outside of classic trading.
At the same time, trading volume fell 13 percent to $310 billion (The Block figure), while the number of funded accounts rose 42 percent to 6.6 million. In other words, the user base grew but traded volume declined, and revenue still rose thanks to diversification beyond trading fees.
To be clear: we have no evidence that the tournament for Ukrainian users is directly connected to these results. These are two separately documented facts, not a proven causal link.
Did the exchange operate without issues during that time?
It's worth noting that on August 14, Kraken reported an incident on its status page: some Kraken Pro app users could not load part of the market charts, and market data was delayed. According to Kraken's notice, trading remained available and the exchange was working to restore normal market data functionality.
This outage affected data display, not the ability to trade itself, and we do not connect it to the tournament. We include it as context on the platform's operation during that period.
What should you watch out for with this type of event?
Contests built on absolute P/L naturally incentivize more aggressive trading, because ranking is decided by the size of the profit. Trading leveraged futures is highly risky, and a participant can lose their deposited capital faster than on the spot market. This is a factual warning, not advice on whether to take part in the tournament.
