CHARLIE MORNING MARKET REPORT, August 31, 2026

The crypto market closes August on a soft note, with broad losses across major coins and the overall market cap dropping 3.6% in 24 hours to $2.6 trillion.

BTC trades at $77,536, down 0.65% on the day. Just over half the crowd (52%) is positioned for a rise, and new leveraged bets on higher prices are being added, with fees charged to those bets running at 7.3% annualised. In the last hour, roughly $1.38 million worth of long positions were forcibly closed by the market, compared to only $71k on the short side, meaning buyers using leverage are taking the pain right now. Bitcoin's share of total crypto value rose to 59.7%, a sign that capital is consolidating into the largest asset rather than spreading across the market.

ETH sits at $2,409, down 1.73%. A large 72.8% of the crowd leans long here, yet the fee paid by those bets is a modest 1.5% annualised and leverage is not building aggressively. The notable picture is on the short side: over $1.86 million in short positions were closed by force in the last hour, more than long liquidations, suggesting that some bets against ETH are getting squeezed even as price drifts lower.

XRP fell 3.2% to $1.347. Seven in ten traders are positioned for a recovery, new leveraged long bets are being added, yet the fee structure has flipped slightly negative (meaning those betting on a fall are actually receiving a small payment rather than paying one). That is a mild tension worth noting. Over $62k in long positions were force-closed in the past hour versus only $4.7k on the short side.

SOL is down 3.4% at $101.53, the sharpest drop of the group. Roughly two thirds of the crowd is long, new leveraged long bets are accumulating, yet the fee paid to those bets is deeply negative at minus 15.4% annualised. That means traders betting on a fall in SOL are paying a significant fee to hold their position, which reflects unusual tension between the crowd's direction and where the leverage cost has settled.

On flows, Bitcoin ETFs recorded a single-day outflow of roughly $202 million today, breaking what had been a positive seven-day streak that totalled $1.84 billion in net inflows. The Fear and Greed index sits at 62, in "Greed" territory, which contrasts with the price action and the regime signal pointing clearly downward with narrow market participation. Over 24 hours, more than $272 million in leveraged long positions were closed by force across the whole market, versus $122 million on the short side. Traditional equity volatility, measured by the VIX, remains calm at 14.4, so there is no external panic signal from that direction.

We are also running an internal measurement (not a signal) on how stretched BTC and ETH look relative to their own history. ETH scores 0.57 out of 1 on that scale and BTC scores 0.34, suggesting ETH looks relatively more extended. We are tracking this for a methodological review on September 22 and treat it as observation only.

Today, the things worth watching are whether the ETF outflow extends into a second day, whether SOL's unusual fee tension resolves, and whether the narrow market breadth begins to widen or tighten further.
