Morning Market Report. October 12, 2026.
The crypto market is drifting quietly higher this morning, with most major coins posting modest gains while the broader picture remains cautious underneath the surface.
Bitcoin is trading at $83,718, up 0.8% over the last 24 hours. Just under 58% of leveraged traders are positioned for further upside, which is a relatively balanced split. The fee that traders betting on rising prices must pay is currently slightly negative, meaning those on the bearish side are actually paying a small cost to hold their positions. Leverage overall is not building in any dramatic way. In the past hour, forced closures of short-side bets ($419k) outpaced forced closures of long-side bets ($136k), which is a mild positive for price stability. Bitcoin now accounts for nearly 60% of the total crypto market cap, the highest share in some time.
Ethereum sits at $2,545, up 1.44%, but the picture under the hood is more tense. Nearly 74% of leveraged traders are betting on a rise, and the fee those traders pay is running at an annualized rate of around 4% in the negative direction, meaning there is meaningful cost pressure on those long-side positions. In the past hour alone, forced closures on the short side reached $4.35 million, the largest single-hour flush across any coin in this report. Over the full 24 hours, Ethereum long-side forced closures hit $10.2 million, the second highest across the market.
XRP is at $1.4048, up just 0.33%. About 70% of leveraged traders lean bullish, and the fee they pay is a positive 3.2% annualized, meaning bulls are carrying a real cost to hold those positions. Liquidation volumes are very small in dollar terms.
Solana trades at $111.84, up 1.67%, with roughly 70% of leveraged traders positioned long. The fee bulls pay here is the highest in this report at 8.6% annualized, meaning there is a notable cost building up for anyone holding leveraged long exposure. Over the past hour, $218k in short-side positions were forcibly closed.
On flows and sentiment, the Fear and Greed index sits at 69, in Greed territory. Bitcoin ETFs recorded a small single-day inflow of $21.1 million today, but the rolling seven-day picture shows a net outflow of $386 million, so sustained institutional buying has not returned yet. The total crypto market cap dropped 2.94% over 24 hours despite most individual coin prices rising, which reflects altcoin weakness elsewhere in the market. The VIX, a measure of expected volatility in traditional stock markets, is calm at 14.84.
The broader regime reading points to a distribution phase, meaning the market is moving upward in price but with mixed participation across coins and some signs that supply is meeting demand at current levels. This does not guarantee a reversal, but it does suggest the rally is not broadly supported.
Things worth watching today: whether ETH's high concentration of leveraged long positions continues to attract forced closures, how SOL's elevated cost for bullish leveraged bets evolves through the session, and whether the seven-day ETF outflow streak reverses or deepens. We also measure an overheating score for BTC (0.33 out of 1) and ETH (0.31), both moderate readings, but these are measurements we track over time rather than signals with a confirmed directional edge.

XRP Ledger defends emergency fix for bug that could have minted XRP
XRP Ledger developers are defending the Sept. 25 fix that skipped the usual two week validator vote, arguing the flaw would otherwise have stayed public for weeks. The integer overflow in the payment engine, present since 2015, allowed XRP to be created beyond the fixed supply, and developers say it was never exploited.
