Morning Market Report. October 23, 2026.

The broader crypto market opened the day in a mild retreat, with total market cap down about 1.1% over the past 24 hours to roughly $2.76 trillion, and no major alarm signals firing.

Bitcoin is trading at $81,890, down 1.1% on the day. About 68% of leveraged crowd positions are betting on further gains, and the fee those traders pay to hold their bets (a cost that builds when optimism is crowded) sits at 6.4% annualized, which is moderate. Leverage is not piling up aggressively here. In the past hour, short-side forced closures ($932k) dwarfed long-side forced closures ($165k), meaning traders who had bet against Bitcoin were squeezed out, not the bulls. Over 24 hours, however, $94 million worth of leveraged long bets on BTC were forcibly closed, a notable flush.

Ethereum is at $2,413, down 1.1%. Crowd positioning is heavily skewed toward bulls at 77.8%, and the bet-holding fee runs at 5.1% annualized. Forced closures of bullish leveraged positions are actively occurring, and $64 million in ETH long bets were wiped in the past 24 hours. Short-side closures in the last hour ($1.88 million) also ran large, pointing to two-sided volatility under the surface.

XRP ($1.32, down 1.8%) and SOL ($104.48, down 0.9%) both show similar patterns: crowd positioning heavily long (77% and 75% respectively), and forced closures of bullish leveraged bets are ongoing. SOL carries the highest bet-holding fee of the group at 10.9% annualized, meaning optimistic leveraged traders there are paying the steepest ongoing cost to maintain their positions.

On flows, Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded a single-day outflow of roughly $381 million yesterday, though the 7-day rolling picture still shows net inflows of about $355 million. The streak of outflows is just one day old, so it is too early to read a trend. The Fear and Greed index sits precisely at 50, neutral, matching the regime data which describes the market as mixed in breadth and trending downward in the short term at normal volatility. The VIX (a measure of expected turbulence in traditional equity markets) is at 19, not elevated.

What to watch today: The asymmetry between long and short forced closures is the standout observation. Across the market, $335 million in bullish leveraged bets were forcibly closed over the past 24 hours versus only $47 million on the bearish side, a roughly 7-to-1 ratio. That kind of imbalance tells us crowded optimism is being tested. We are also tracking a mild overheat reading on both BTC and ETH (scored at 0.6 out of 1.0 as of last month), but this is purely a measurement we monitor and has no confirmed predictive edge on its own. The ETF flow picture after today's session will be worth watching to see whether yesterday's outflow was a one-off or the start of a shift in institutional appetite.
