Morning Market Report. October 16, 2026.
Markets are grinding modestly higher on the surface, but several signals underneath the price action deserve a closer look today.
Bitcoin is trading at $82,046, up 0.76% over the past 24 hours. About 60% of leveraged traders are positioned for further upside, and the fee that bullish leveraged bettors pay to hold their positions sits at an annualised 5.1%, which is moderate rather than alarming. Leverage overall is not building aggressively. That said, in the past hour alone roughly $259,000 worth of bullish leveraged positions were forcibly closed, compared to just $6,000 on the bearish side, suggesting some short-term turbulence for bulls even within a relatively calm session.
Ethereum is up 2.63% to $2,439. The crowd is more tilted toward the upside here, with 72% of leveraged participants betting on a rise, and new bullish leveraged bets are actively being added. The fee those bulls pay is running at 7.8% annualised. In the last hour, about $100,000 in bearish leveraged positions were closed out forcibly, meaning bears were squeezed, which partly explains the price bounce. Over the full 24-hour window, more than $32 million in bullish Ethereum positions were liquidated overall, so the session has not been one-directional.
XRP sits at $1.3354, up 1.55%. The picture here is notably stretched: 72.8% of leveraged traders lean bullish, and the fee paid by those bulls is the highest in today's report at 11% annualised. New bullish leveraged bets are also accumulating. Liquidations in the past hour were roughly balanced between both sides, around $9,000 to $10,000 each way, so no decisive squeeze in either direction just yet.
Solana trades at $105.36, up 2.24%, with 70.5% of leveraged traders on the bullish side and a moderate fee of 4.7% annualised. Leverage is not building heavily here. Notably, around $14,700 in bearish positions were forcibly closed in the last hour against only $1,700 on the bullish side, consistent with the broader short squeeze pattern seen in altcoins this morning.
On flows and sentiment, the picture is mixed. The Fear and Greed index reads 63, placing us in Greed territory, though not at extreme levels. Bitcoin-focused ETFs have seen money leaving for two days running, with outflows totalling roughly $867 million over the past week. The total crypto market cap sits at $2.77 trillion, but it actually fell 2.09% over the past 24 hours even as individual coin prices moved up, which reflects how derivative and altcoin markets are behaving beneath the headline numbers. Bitcoin continues to dominate at 59.3% of total market value. The VIX, a measure of expected turbulence in traditional stock markets, is at 16.46, which is relatively calm and not signalling any immediate external shock from equities.
What to watch today. The sustained ETF outflow trend is worth monitoring: if money continues leaving Bitcoin investment products while spot prices hold or rise, that tension typically resolves one way or another and becomes clearer within a few sessions. XRP's elevated cost for bullish leveraged bettors makes it a coin to observe closely, as historically high fees in that position can either attract profit-taking or trigger a short squeeze if sellers try to push back. For ETH and SOL, the ongoing addition of new bullish leveraged bets means any sudden price reversal could accelerate as those positions unwind. We are also measuring an internal heat score for BTC at 0.57 and ETH at 0.37 on a scale to 1.0 but these are measurements we are tracking over time rather than confirmed signals, so treat them as background context only.
